English
is a considered a Read 180 curriculum. It is meant to develop solid
writing, communication, literacy analysis skills, and reading
comprehension. It is our goal to prepare students for future courses in middle and high school. We study literature and poetry
through historical, social, and political contexts and identify author's
techniques in the piece. We use the writing process and reflect,
discuss, and revise our own work. The primary focus in writing will be
in Narrative, Expository, and Argumentative texts. We will also be
studying vocabulary and grammar this year in conjunction with our Social
Studies class. Our goal is for students to be able to utilize the
thinking strategies of visualization, making connections, asking
questions, synthesizing and summarizing. Students will be asked to set
goals and we will monitor our progress throughout the year.

Social Studies
Let
no one be discouraged by the belief there is nothing one person can do
against the enormous array of the world's ills, misery, ignorance, and
violence. Few will have the greatness to bend history, but each of us
can work to change a small portion of events. And in the total of all
those acts will be written the history of a generation. - Robert Kennedy
