Volunteering

Volunteer Image

At North Kitsap School District, we strongly believe in the power of community. Volunteers are an integral part of our school environment, helping us provide an exceptional and supportive educational experience for our students. By contributing your time, you can enrich our students' learning opportunities and become a vital part of our school community.

We appreciate your interest in getting involved with your local schools — because together, we can achieve more!

Getting Started

To ensure the safety of our students, all volunteers must complete an application and undergo a background check. We have moved to an entirely online process, making it easier than ever to get started.

Complete the Online Application

Please choose your preferred language and click the link below to begin your application.

For NKSD Students

If you are a current NKSD student wishing to volunteer, please follow these steps to complete your application:

  1. Complete the NKSD Student Volunteer Form, including all required signatures.
  2. Submit your application online through one of the links in the “Complete the Online Application” section above and select “NKSD Student Volunteer” as your function. You will upload the completed NKSD Student Volunteer Form and a copy of your ID (school or government) when you submit your application.

Important Information:

  • All student volunteers must follow district policies and guidelines, including those on harassment, safety, and professional boundaries. Please review the Required Policies and Guidelines before volunteering.
  • Your volunteer application will be reviewed, and approval is required before participating in any activities.

For District Employees

If you are a North Kitsap School District employee, you have two options for volunteering:

Important Information

Volunteer Application & Background Checks

  • Your volunteer application is valid for two years. If you wish to continue volunteering after this period, you will need to submit a new application before the old one expires.
  • An applicant may be denied based on prior criminal offenses or other factors. Our top priority is student safety, and we carefully consider the nature of the offense before making a decision. If denied, you will receive an email or mailed notification explaining the decision along with a copy of your Washington State Patrol Criminal History report.

Required Policies and Guidelines

As part of your application, you must review and confirm your understanding of the following district policies and procedures.

Liability and Insurance

While volunteering, you are provided with the same liability coverage as district employees. Please note, this coverage does not include medical benefits for accidental injury, so we encourage you to maintain your own health or accident insurance.

Private Vehicle Use

If you wish to transport students on field trips, please complete a Use of Private Vehicle Form in addition to your volunteer application. This form can be printed from the link provided, or obtained in any school office. Please submit completed forms to the school office.

Volunteer Expectations & Guidelines

These guidelines are designed to help create safe and successful experiences for everyone involved.

Working with Students

  • Be a part of the team: You are an important member of the school team. Follow the direction of school staff and communicate with the classroom teacher if you have questions or concerns.
  • Enjoy working with students: Show a genuine interest in each student, accept them, and provide assistance without doing the work for them.
  • Maintain confidentiality: All student information is confidential. Do not discuss students or their progress with anyone other than the teacher. If a parent asks you about their student's progress, please suggest they contact the teacher directly.

Ground Rules

  • Always sign in at the school office and wear a temporary ID badge while on school grounds.
  • Wear appropriate attire in accordance with school policy and show respect for all staff and students.
  • Do not bring younger children with you during your scheduled volunteer hours.
  • Turn off your cell phone ringer and refrain from making personal calls while volunteering in the classroom.
  • No smoking, tobacco, drugs, alcohol, or weapons are allowed in district vehicles or on school facilities, including athletic fields.

Safe Interaction with Students

To maintain professional boundaries and ensure a safe environment, please remember these guidelines:

  • All interactions must be professional and focused on teaching and learning.
  • Do not initiate social activities with students outside of school or engage in social media networking with them.
  • Do not take photos or videos of students and post them on personal or social media websites.
  • Report any suspected abuse or neglect to the principal, school counselor, or another school district employee immediately.
